Community Art in a Techno World

My sister is a collage artist and I’ve watched with fascination as she explores…well, tactile art in a technological time. That was a great-sounding sentence, by the way. It’s a social thing for her. Because I work in Ann Arbor web design, I don’t have tactile outlets beyond typing, and let’s face it nor do I have a lot of social outlets on the job. My sister “meets up” with other artists in online communities and they share materials, sometimes she is given materials that she is obligated to use, which she likes, because it stretches her imagination. Sometimes themes are decided upon ahead of time. Sometimes they pass around, via snail mail, an old book, which they each take a section of pages to collage. It’s almost like a collage of collages. Wow, I’m deep. It’s not even about the art that is produced. It seems to me the act of community is what’s important.
