The mining area was found by three prospectors that decided to camp in the area for the night. When the got up in the morning their horses were gone so they started looking around and low and behold they found gold. After “in-fighting” they sold the mine and moved on. It was opened again by the new owner for a few years and then closed again. In 1898 a huge load was discovered which produced over $200,000 in gold over the next 10 years. The mine finally closed for good (at least to date) in 1940 and the area became a “ghost town”. The mining buildings are on private property so there are no visitors allowed although you can see if from the highway.
